Amazing hiking in Ngorongoro Crater Highlands

Are you in to hiking? Maybe climbing a peak like Kilimanjaro is not your thing. Maybe you prefer walking in scenic environments without necessarily climbing the highest peaks. Tanzania has some great hiking. Our favorite trail is Ngorongoro Crater Highlands. North of the Ngorongoro Crater there is a 4 day hiking trail that takes you from Ngorongoro Crater via the other two great calderas in the area (Olmoti Crater and Empakai Crater), Masai villages, highland savannah with antelopes and sparse acacia tree and the amazing Great Rift Valley Escarpment all the way to Lake Natron and the Masai people’s holy mountain, Oldonyo Lengai.

It is possible to combine safari in northern Tanzania (Tarangire, Lake Manyara, Ngorongoro Crater and/or Serengeti) with a hike through Ngorongoro Crater Highlands.

We can guarantee that this hike is an experience way beyond most things you have done. Your guides are local Masais. You camp near Masai villages and donkeys carry your luggage. Welcome for an adventure of a life time.

The great migration in western Serengeti

In May and June, the end of the green season and beginning of the dry season the enormous herds of the great migration move northwest from Ndutu and turn north passing Serengeti’s Western Corridor and the Grumeti River. This is a spectacular time of the year to see the migration, yet much less known than the migration season in Ndutu (December to March) or in Masai Mara, Kenya (August to October). This is your chance to see the herds of wildebeests and zebras without other safari jeeps around you.

You can fly from Arusha straight to Grumeti and have a safari with private vehicle in Serengeti before you fly to Zanzibar. Or, you can drive with private jeep from Arusha to Serengeti passing other parks such as Lake Manyara and Ngorongoro Crater on the way.

Serengetis great north and the untamed wilderness at Lake Natron

Lake Natron in the very north of Tanzania, to the east of Loliondo and Serengeti is rugged wilderness way beyond the beaten tracks. Here you experience nature at the foot of the active volcano Oldonyo Lengai and the Great Rift Valley Escarpment. Hike to waterfalls and see thousands of Flamingos in the lake and gaze upon the amazing starlit sky at night. From lake Natron you can take the road to Serengeti’s great north.

The northern areas of Lobo, Kogatende and Mara have some of the best wildlife in all the Serengeti-Masai Mara ecosystem. The area comes into its prime when the migration is here between August and October, but that is also the time it is at its busiest. Come when the migration is not here to see enormous prides of lions, buffaloes, and elephants but few tourists.
