Our Tanzania adventure walking safari takes you on a journey through Tanzania's wild kingdom, by jeep and by foot. Spot lions and cheetahs on the endless plains of Serengeti, majestic elephant bulls and black rhinos in Ngorongoro Crater and then walk with masai guides across the volcanic Ngorongoro Crater Highlands. Highlights of the journey

Walking in Crater Highlands

In the highlands you walk passed enormous calderas, grassplains, masai villages and mighty mountains.

Lake Natron

Your walk ends at Lake Natron. The worlds most alkaline lake is the breeding ground for all of East Africa's flamingos.

Oldonyo Lengai

The active strato volcano is the masai people's holy mountain and a mighty sight as it rises hig above the plains south of Lake Natron.

Serengeti

The endless plains of the Serengeti is home to huge prides of lions and the annual wildebeest migration.

Olmoti and Empakai Craters

To huge calderas in the mountains north of Ngorongoro Crater. Discover them by foot as our trail takes you right by them both.

Itinerary

Day 1: Arrival in Tanzania

When you arrive at Kilimanjaro Airport you will be met be African Tours & Safaris staff. We drive you to your hotel and make sure you get checked in. If you arrive in the mornign you have the rest of the day to yourself. Relax and unwind, take a dip in the pool or just rest after a long flight.  Overnight at Planet Lodge. Dinner is included. Cost for drinks for dinner not included. 

Day 2: Safari in Lake Manyara

At 08:30 your safari guide come to the hotel to pick you up. 09:00 departure for Lake Manyara. The drive to Lake Manyara takes about 2,5 hours. Short stop at the gate when you arrive. At the gate you can use the toilet and learn more about the park while your guide is handling the formalities. The rest of the day is spent with game drive in Lake Manyara. Lake Manyara is one of the best places in Africa so see many elephants, up close. The park is small but diverse with forest, savannah, wetlands anf off course the lake itself. In Lake Manyara you can see animals like zebra, giraffe, wildebeest, baboon, wharthog, hippo, buffalo and many different species of birds. Leopard and lions are common in the park but hard to see. You stop for picnic lunch at a rest stop inside the park. Late afternoon you leave Lake Manyara and drive to your lodge which is in Karatu just east of the Ngorongoro Crater. Overnight at Octagon Lodge. Breakfast, lunch and dinner is included. Cost for drinks for dinner not included. 

Day 3: To Serengeti

After breakfast you leave you lodge and drive, via the rim of Ngorongoro Crater, to Serengeti. Mid-morning you pass the main gate at Nabi Hill and after that you spend the rest of the day spotting animals in  this amazing park. Among the animals you can see during your days in Serengeti are lion, hyena, leopard, cheetah, jackal, cerval, impala, Thomson’s gazelle, Grant’s gazelle, water buck, topi, hippo, buffalo, giraffe, springbok and many more. Overnight at Nyati Migration Camp. Breakfast, lunch and dinner is included. Cost for drinks for dinner not included. 

Day 4: Serengeti

A full day with game drives in Serengeti. With your guide you decide what time to leave in the morning and what time to come back in the afternoon. Picnic lunch in the park. Overnight at Nyati Migration Camp. Breakfast, lunch and dinner is included. Cost for drinks for dinner not included. 

Day 5: Ngorongoro Crater

After breakfast you leave the camp and drive to Ngorongoro Crater. En route you will see animals. After a short stop on the rim you drive down to the floor of the crater. In the crater you will have your best chance to see rhino. Other animals that you are likely to see inside the crater include lion, hyena, buffalo, hippo, zebra, wildebeest, vervet monkey among others. Picnic lunch on a rest site inside the crater. Late afternoon you leave the crater and drive to your lodg ethat is just beyond the rim overlooking the mountains of the southern Ngorongoro Highlands. Overnight at Ngorongoro Rhino Lodge. Breakfast, lunch and dinner is included. Cost for drinks for dinner not included. 

Day 6: Walking; Olmoti Crater to Nainokanoka village

After breakfast at Ngorongoro Rhino Lodge you drive to Olmoti Crater. The drive goes along the southern and eastern rim of the Ngorongoro Crater. At Olmoti Crater the walking starts. During the days when you walk in crater higlhands you will be guided by Masai warriors. The day starts with a walk down to the floor of the Olmoti Crater where you will see some animals like antelopes and zebras. Afer a picnic lunch you leave Olmoti Crater and walk towards Nainokanoka Village where you will discover Massai culture.The walk is fairly easy with a few tougher up- and downhills. Overnight (camping) at Bulati Camp right next to the village. Breakfast lunch and dinner is included, including drinks. All meals during the walk are prepared by your chef. 

Day 7: Walking; Nainokanoka village to Empakai Crater

You start the day with an early breakfast prepared by your chef and then set out to walk to Empakai Crater. The walk to the crater has quite a few uphills as the rim of the crater is at high altitude (above 3 000 meters). You stop for lunch and then walk down to the floor of the crater. The crater is about 6 kms wide and 300 meters deep and like Ngorongoro Crater it is actually a caldera (collapsed volcano) and not a crater. Half of the floor of the crater is occupied by a lake where flocks of flamingos can be spotted. The scenery is spectacular at every point. From the northern and eastern side you can look out to the dramatic cone of Oldonyo Lengai, the Great Rift Valley and Lake Natron. On the valleys eastern side you might see the snow capped peak of Kilimanjaro, Camp on the Crater Rim of Empakai. Camping on the rim of the crater. Breakfast lunch and dinner is included, including drinks.

Day 8: Walking; Empakai Crater to Rift Valley escarpment

Breakfast around 08:30 this morning and then you start walking towards the Rift Valley. Today the walk is fairly easy. You stop for lunch and early afternoon arrive at the Rift Valley Escarpment where you have amazing views of Oldonyo Lengai (Mountain of god in Maa) the Masai people’s holy mountain. Camping on the rim of the Rift Valley escarpment. Breakfast lunch and dinner is included, including drinks.

Day 9: Walking; Rift Valley to Lake Natron

After breakfast you start walking down towards the base of Oldonyo Lengai. The trail is fairly steep at parts and as you descend the weather will increasingly become hotter so the walk is fairly slow today. The views as you walk down are amazing overlooking Lake Natron, Oldonyo Lengai and in the distance the Gilai Mountains. Early afternoon you arrive to your camp in the shadow of acacia trees near Lake Natron. Relax for a while in the afternoon heat and then explore the area around camp by foot for a while before dinner. Camping near Lake Natron. Breakfast lunch and dinner is included, including drinks.

Day 10: Lake Natron and then back to Arusha

After early breakfast you start a guided tour of Lake Natron where the highlights include the Engaresero river gorge, breeding flamingos in the soda lake, waterfalls and rift cliffs, (water-shoes are required, and swimsuits!) After lunch you get into a car and drive back to Arusha. Overnight at Planet Lodge. Breakfast lunch and dinner is included, drinks for dinner are not included. 

Day 11: Going home

We will pick you up at your hotel for your airport transfer 3 hours before your international flight and 3,5 hours before a domestic flight. We hope you have had an amazing time with us in Tanzania and wish you safe travels home.
